Background In 2020 and 2021 during the Maryland General Assembly Sessions, the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition (MCRC), National Nurses United (NNU), and the End Medical Debt MD coalition worked to expand the number of people eligible for free or reduced cost hospital care and eliminate predatory practices when hospitals sue patients for medical debt. Thanks to strong champions, your calls and emails, and our advocacy efforts, we were able to pass HB1420/SB875 in 2020 and HB565/SB514 in 2021. Medical debt protections have been furthered expanded in Maryland with the passage of HB694, the Medical Bill Reimbursement Act of 2022.
